Fragrance Layering - Autumn Edit

What is Perfume Layering?

Perfume layering is essentially pairing two fragrances to create a new personal scent with the overlapping fragrance notes complimenting one another. This can enhance certain notes or even bring out new scents to create that perfect final fragrance. Part of the fun of course is experimenting with different perfumes and finding the one for you.

To layer different perfumes you may like to spray the perfumes either over the top of one another or choose a different pulse point (neck, wrists, behind ear) for each fragrance.

Another method to layering different scents is to mix different mediums of fragrance. For example, Fragonard offers many of their fragrances in a range of products such as lotions, hand creams, soaps and gels. This is a perfect way to enhance any scent you own in a unique and subtle way if layering the perfume itself seems daunting.

How to layer different autumnal scents

Iconic scents of autumn tend to favour warmer fragrance notes as the month begins to cool down. These notes are often stronger and more long-lasting that those found in summer fragrances to create comforting and cozy scents as the season changes.

These include: Amber, Musk, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Vetiver, Incense, Orange blossom, Cinnamon, Vanilla and Caramel to name a few.

These notes can be grouped into Gourmand, Oriental and Woody note families.

GOURMAND – Vanilla, Caramel, Musk

ORIENTAL – Orange Blossom, Cinnamon, Incense, Amber

WOODY – Vetiver, Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Amber, Patchouli (there is often overlap with these catagories)

Another way to try layering different perfumes is by experimenting with similar note families:
By grouping fragrances based on similar note families, layering is made much easier. For example, fragrances that are heavy on woods will pair nicely together and the notes will blend together to create a new unique scent.
